Newly Discovered Globular Clusters in the Outer Halo of M31
We present nine newly discovered globular clusters in the outer halo of M31, found by a semi-automated procedure from an INT Wide Field Camera survey of the region. The sample includes a candidate at the largest known projected galactocentric radius yet from M31.
متن کاملGlobular clusters and the formation of the outer Galactic halo
Globular clusters in the outer halo (Rgc > 15 kpc) are found to be systematically fainter than those at smaller Galactocentric distances. Within the outer halo the compact clusters with halflight radii Rh < 10 pc are only found at Rgc < 40 kpc, while on the other hand the larger clusters with Rh > 10 pc are encountered at all Galactocentric distances. Among the compact clusters with Rh < 10 pc ...
متن کاملA comparison of the globular cluster luminosity functions of the inner and outer halo of the Milky Way and M31
We show that the globular cluster luminosity function (GCLF) of the inner halo of the Milky Way is statistically different from the GCLF of the outer halo. We also find a similar difference between the inner and outer halo population of M31. We assert that this difference is evidence for some form of dynamical evolution of the cluster population and/or a dependence of GCLF shape on the environm...
متن کاملTracing the Sgr Stream with 2 MASS Detection of Stream stars around Outer Halo Globular Clusters ⋆
We use infrared Color Magnitude Diagrams from the 2-Micron All-Sky Survey (2MASS) to search for stars belonging to the tidal stream of the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy (Sgr dSph) around selected Galactic globular clusters. Statistically significant detections are presented for the cases of Pal 12 and NGC 4147, strongly supporting the idea that these clusters are associated with the Sgr S...
متن کاملHalo enrichment by disrupted globular clusters
We study the evolution of the galactic globular cluster system to determine its initial mass-function and the fraction of halo stars that could have come from disrupted globular clusters. We study the cluster evolution under the influence of two destruction mechanisms: Twobody relaxation and dynamical friction. New results of N -body simulations are used for the lifetimes of clusters dissolving...
